2021 Kingfisher (OK) point guard Bijan Cortes capped off his summer with a Nike Peach Jam championship.
Cortes chipped in 12 points, four assist and three rebounds in front Oklahoma State’s Mike Boynton, who later offered him a scholarship.
“It was pretty cool to receive that offer,” he said. “They were the first school that looked at me so it was sweet.”
Cortes stands out because he’s patient and always seems to take the right shot. He shot 72-percent from the floor at the Peach Jam and led Team Griffin in assist.
“I think coaches like my game because I can push the ball, finish in the lane and create for others,” he said. “I have that mindset that I don’t want to lose at all.”
Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Arkansas, Colorado State, UTSA and Loyola-Chicago, among others, are currently recruiting him, but none are coming as hard as his hometown Big 12 school.
“Probably right now it’s Oklahoma,” he said. “They are always there and recruiting me hard.”
With both in-state schools now in the mix, Cortes will have a difficult decision to make because both Oklahoma and Oklahoma State have an advantage.
“They both do have an advantage,” Cortes explained. “But, I want to go to a place where I think I can fit and play a role that I like and fits me.”
Since AAU has concluded, Cortes has been enjoying the recruiting process. Loyola and Arkansas are trying to get him up to campus for a visit, but he hasn’t set the date yet. Right now, it’s about improving his game and working hard.
“I’m trying to work on making jumpers consistently,” he said. “Just working on my pull-ups and also getting stronger.”
