Junior college guard Eric Reed Jr was underappreciated and undervalued coming out of University Lab (LA).
Reed played with talent such as Skylar Mays and Wayde Sims, who both attend LSU, and Jalen Johnson of Louisiana Lafayette at the high school level and still held his own.
Unfortunately coming out of high school, Reed Jr only had two NAIA offers to his name. After that, as he puts it, he had to start proving a lot of people wrong.
The junior college route would soon prove to be a valuable path for the Louisiana native, who had programs such as Utah Valley, Incarnate Word, Albany, Mount St. Mary’s, Texas Southern, UMass-Lowell, Maryland Eastern Shore, UC Davis and NJIT courting him.
After a long recruiting process that saw many Division I program get involved, Reed decided it was time to narrow down his list of schools.
Utah Valley, Albany, Incarnate Word, NJIT and Mount St. Mary’s round out his top five schools.
“Now was the right time because these five schools have shown plenty of love throughout the year,” Reed Jr explained. “I have also been able to develop great relationships with the coaching staffs at these schools and I feel like these schools give me the best opportunity to succeed on and off the court.”
Official visits to all five are being planned as of now, but with most of the sporting world being shut down due to the corona virus, so are his plans to travel to college campuses.
“I do have visits planned to Albany for right now. I did have NJIT scheduled but this corona virus has affected that,” Reed said. “But, I also plan to schedule my other visits soon.”
The corona virus has had a major impact around all sports. It has shut down the NBA, the NCAA sports and some recruiting opportunities for college coaches.
It also will impact his recruitment in a way that might delay his ability to commit when he wants.
“It has affected a lot,” he said of the virus. “Not sure when I’m going to be able to sign.”
Nonetheless, he still happens to be coordinating visits with the programs in hopes to get to campus soon.
“I’m in the process of getting ready to visit all of these schools,” he said. “Once I am able to visit these campuses and see the atmosphere I’ll be ready to make my decision.”
