Cleveland State officially offered 2021 Duncanville (TX) shooting guard Damon Nicholas Jr, who assistant coach Dickey Nutt has been watching since his days at Florida State.
Coach Nutt, who coached at Arkansas State in the late 90’s and through much of the 2000’s, coached Nicholas Jr’s father. So this offer from Cleveland State meant a lot to Nicholas Jr.
“I was super excited. I like to see that my hard work is paying off and I get a chance to get a free college education,” he said. “I am super excited, and knowing my parents don’t have to pay for school, I’m just excited about that.
“I was also excited to get that offer on my birthday. One of my birthday wishes came true.”
Cleveland State lands within his recruitment with a unique connection that could help their efforts in the long run.
“You always want to go somewhere where it’s someone you can trust,” he said. “But, with that being said, I want to take different looks at different campuses and look forward to comparing the schools. I also love winning programs and programs that want to win.”
Along with Cleveland State, North Texas, Oral Roberts, Sam Houston State, Denver, SMU, Loyola-Chicago and Arkansas State are recruiting Nicholas Jr.
“I am an all around player. I can score, rebound, play defense and I am a coachable player,” Nicholas Jr explained. “Coaches also emphasize me being a winner with me winning Adidas Nationals and winning a 6A High School State championship.”
SMU, which is 25 minutes away from Duncanville HS, also offered Nicholas Jr a scholarship back in December of 2019. The close proximity to his home, his family and friends, is something that could be appealing, as well as their basketball pedigree in the American.
The Mustangs are certainly right there with everyone else in his recruitment, as he is wide open, but he does like a lot about the program.
“When I had got that SMU offer I felt super excited about it,” he said. “They have an amazing coaching staff and a great campus.”
