Staying in the state of New York didn’t play that big of a part in the decision of Ryan Myers, but Rick Pitino definitely did.
Pitino and his assistant coach Tom Abatemarco secured a commitment from the 6-3 combo guard that has a ton of potential.
“I believe what they have to offer will help me out on the basketball court and my life in general. They’ll open a lot of doors for me,” Myers explained. “They believe in my skill set and my ability, and will help get me better in the future.”
Ryan Myers joins junior college sharpshooter Tahlik Chavez in Pitino’s 2020 recruiting class at Iona.
“I’m looking forward to being apart of that,” Myers said. “Being apart of something special and what Rick Pitino is trying to do with the Iona program.”
Myers is an extremely underrated guard with a high ceiling. He said coach Pitino compared him to Russ Smith and the comparison is accurate. Myers knows exactly what he can bring to the college level and being in Pitino’s system will only help his game that much more.
“Rick Pitino is a guard coach, and when I spoke to him, he compared me to Russ Smith,” Myers explained. “It’s like an up-tempo style that I believe fits my game because I’m a scorer, we’re going to play fast, keep the tempo going and play defense.”
