6-foot-4 point guard Jalen Smith of Oak Ridge (FL) recently received an offer from Illinois-Chicago.
Illinois-Chicago adds to Smith’s impressive offer list that includes SMU, Florida Atlantic, South Florida, Florida Gulf Coast, Texas State, Hofstra, Stetson and Liberty.
“I have known coach Yak [Luke Yaklich] for a few months now. When he was at Texas he came to see me practice and play, and loved my game,” Smith said. “I actually took an official visit to Texas and we had a lot of conversations about the player I could become.”
Murray State, College of Charleston and Wofford, are just some of the programs to show interest recently.
They all like his athleticism and versatility, and have followed him to watch how he progresses.
“I can play either guard position and I’m athletic,” he said. “They love my length, I can shoot it, score when needed to but definitely that I’m a two-way player is what coaches love the most. My defense is what every coach mentions.”
There’s still a lot of basketball left to be played for Smith. He is still enjoying the process and giving everyone a fair chance at recruiting him.
He doesn’t plan on narrowing down or committing any time soon. In fact, the virus has derailed his timeline and left him with some important decisions going forward.
“My plan was to narrow it down before my senior season started and possibly commit,” he said. “But, with everything going on now I’m not sure if I will stick to that…could go longer.”
