Trey Wertz, who led Santa Clara in assist this past season, announced today that he will be attending Notre Dame.

He chose Notre Dame over Arizona, Butler and North Carolina.

“They play with a lot of guards and allow freedom on offense,” he told Phenom Hoop Report’s Rick Lewis. “Also, they have high academics.”

The 6-foot-4, 185-pound Wertz was one of the most coveted guards on the transfer market and heard from North Carolina, NC State, Clemson, Oklahoma, Cincinnati, Arizona and Butler, among others.

Wertz averaged 11.9 points, 3.9 assist and 3.5 rebounds per game last season. He received WCC All-Freshman honors during his freshman season and set the school’s freshman assist record.
