Heritage (NC) shooting guard Lucas Taylor earned his first high major Division I offer over the weekend.
The 6-foot-5 guard received an offer from Vanderbilt after hearing from head coach Jerry Stackhouse and first-year assistant coach Faragi Phillips.
Vanderbilt makes it six scholarship offers for Taylor with the others coming from Wofford, East Carolina, Hofstra, Holy Cross and North Carolina A&T.
“I like the SEC a lot and getting to compete against teams like Kentucky and LSU plus others,” Taylor said. “They also have really good academics, which I really like.”
Murray State is another program that recently reached out and the staff completed a virtual visit with the rising junior. They like his size at the guard spot and have told him that they believe he can be the next big thing in Murray, Kentucky.
“Basically that I can be a big part of something special,” he said. “They have a track record of putting guards in the league and think they can get me there too.”
Taylor finished his junior year at Heritage averaging 21.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game, and was named NAC 6 co-Player of the Year after leading his team to another NAC 6 conference championship.
Throughout his junior season, Taylor proved that he was an elite scorer but also that he could lead a team. He finished with 23 points in the game that tied for first in the conference and then finished with 27 points in the game that helped win the conference title.
These types of performances in big games are exactly why big-time Division I programs are offering him a scholarship.
“[Coaches like] that I can score on all three levels,” he said. “I have range from three, along with being able to play point some too at 6-foot-6.”
