One of the most impressive guards in New Jersey, Jaylen Blakes is continuing to elevate himself further in the 2021 recruiting class.
This last week, Blakes of Blair Academy (NJ) received offers from Georgetown and Virginia Tech to increase his scholarship list that also includes, DePaul, Georgia, Harvard, Iona, Penn State, Rutgers, Stanford, St. John’s, UConn and Yale.
Indiana, Princeton, Texas and UPenn are also showing interest.
Blakes steady attitude, competitiveness and athleticism are some of the many things that make his game attractive to coaches. Given his origins on the east coast, it’s no wonder that he exudes the toughness every coaching staff likes.
“Coaches admire my leadership, the competitiveness and toughness that I bring to the game,” he said. “Also, my desire, my intensity on defense and my ability to score at all three levels. I pride myself on giving my all every time I step on the court and going into each game with my team to battle for wins.”
Georgetown, who offered him on April 28th, gives Blakes another amazing opportunity to pursue academics, as well as, a future in basketball.
“It is a well respected academic school and they play in the very competitive Big East,” Blakes said. “Coach Patrick Ewing has a deep understanding of the game given his professional playing and NBA coaching experience. I have enjoyed my conversations with members of the coaching staff. They love my game and I look forward to learning more during the recruiting process.”
Blakes next destination remains unknown. Many programs continue to emerge, and all offer him the opportunity to excel academically and athletically.
He’s taken visits to Harvard, Rutgers, UConn and Yale, and recently took a virtual visit of Stanford with the coaching staff, and plans to take more in the future.
He’s receiving guidance from his head coach at Blair Academy and he’s been very thankful for everything the staff has done to advance his recruitment.
“I am grateful for the guidance and continued support that coach [Joe] Mantegna and the entire Blair coaching staff has provided me during this entire process,” he said. “It’s such an exciting time for me and my family.”
