Lake Forest (IL) forward Walter Mattingly has the best of both worlds.
Mattingly has many different levels recruiting him, and also just picked up his first Division I offer from IUPUI. His pool of schools will all be judged fairly and at this point, he’s not considering one more than the other.
“I’d love to play at the highest level for sure but I’m not opposed to going Division II,” he explained. “Especially if I feel like I find a great school that I absolutely love. I’d go to that one over a Division I.”
The Citadel, Holy Cross, Illinois Springfield, St. Thomas, Emporia State, Purdue Fort Wayne, Navy, Appalachian State and Air Force have all reached out in the last couple of weeks. More schools have shown interest but those schools are the ones that have keyed in on him and really like what he has to offer on the court.
“[Coaches like] my ability to stretch floor and my versatility on the offensive end,” he said. “Defensively, I can guard positions one through four.”
At 6-foot-7, Mattingly has the size to really make an impact on the court, and to improve his offensive output, he’s been, “working on my jumper and my handle the most right now.”
With his recruitment really starting to pick up, Mattingly isn’t really to settle down just yet. He’s still giving coaches a fair chance to recruit him and will remain open.
“I feel like I’m just getting started right now,” he said. “I think I’m going to take some officials later this year. I’m not close to making a decision right now but I think I’m looking to commit sometime in late 2020, early 2021.”
