Earlier this year in February, 2021 guard Jack Chapman received his first Division I scholarship offer from UMKC.
Fast forward to November 1st, and he decided that staying home was the best option for him and his family. He joins 2021 United Kingdom forward Blake Bowman in UMKC’s 2021 recruiting class and it was all about the relationship with the staff.
“The coaching staff was honest and transparent,” Chapman said. “A lot of schools will lie to you but UMKC always kept it real and made sure I was in the loop.”
Chapman will enter the Summit League from Blue Valley Northwest (KS). The Kansas kid stays home and he will be able to play in front of all of his friends and family.
“It’s a great opportunity to be able to play at a school that represents my home city,” he said. “Being close to home allows family, coaches and friends to come watch, and allows me to keep connections with them.”
A few other programs were trying to make strong pushes at Chapman, but UMKC really stepped in and made a big impression right away. For Chapman, UMKC checked a lot of boxes, including the fact that they run a system that he can see himself flourish in.
“I’m confident I’ll fit in well,” Chapman explained. “I’m a versatile player so I can do a variety of things to contribute. Coach [Billy] Donlon emphasizes defense, so there’s a little bit of freedom on offense. I think I’ll be able to do my thing and score some buckets.”
Now that his commitment is out of the way, Chapman is focused on his upcoming season and getting better. He’s focusing on bulking up in the weight room and improving the speed of his shot release as he prepares himself for the Division I level.
