2022 Stephenson (GA) wing Jaylen Peterson just received his long-awaited first scholarship offer and it comes from a coach with a great track record of winning and putting players in position for professional opportunities.
Iona head coach Rick Pitino and assistant coach Tom Abatemarco identified Peterson as a player that could really help their program down the road and offered him a scholarship as a result.
“Coach T [Tom Abatemarco] has been talking to me and sending me a lot of things,” Peterson said. “He sent me a video of their campus just the other day.”
The 6-foot-7 wing is also hearing from Jacksonville State, Appalachian State and a lot of other programs that have contacted his coaches, and more could start coming in after seeing his progress this upcoming season.
The coaches that are actively recruiting him now have said that they appreciate his game on both ends of the floor.
“Mostly my athletic ability,” he said of what coaches like the most about his game. “The way I can get to the basketball and also my defense.”
Right now, the focus is on continuing to get better and making more progress on his overall game. He has keyed in on his shooting as something he really wants to improve and that should help him moving forward.
“Ball handling and shooting, but mostly shooting,” he said of what he wants to improve. “I’m trying to get my jump shot more consistent.”
