Team USA U16 takes care of business against Puerto Rico

Felipe Quinones hit a three pointer with five minutes remaining in the first quarter to give Puerto Rico a 14-13 lead but after that it was all Team USA.

America finished the quarter on a 12-1 run and also went on to win the game by a score of 96-61.

Darryn Peterson led all scorers with 22 points on 9-12 (75%) shooting while adding 6 rebounds and five assist becoming the first player ever with at least 20 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assist in a game for the Team USA U16 team.

Jabari Parker in 2011 is the only other 16u player to record at least 20-5-5 in a game. In 2011, Parker finished with 21 points, 7 rebounds and five steals. Conner Frankamp & Amari Bailey are the only other players with 20 points and five assist for the 16u Team USA squad.

Peterson is a 16-year old guard from Canton, Ohio. He currently attends Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy and is the No. 5 prospect in the class of 2025 according to ESPN.

Along with Peterson, Team USA had three other players score in double-figures. Koa Peat finished with 14 points on 7-11 (64%) shooting, with Cameron Boozer chipping in 10 points and 11 rebounds, along with AJ Dybantsa also scoring 10 points.

For Puerto Rico, Felipe Quinones led the way with 20 points on 7-13 (54%) shooting with 6 triples. Lucas Sigismonti of Argentina back in 2019 was the only other player to hit at least 6 threes against the 16u Team USA squad.

Quinones is a 15-year old guard standing at 6-foot-6 who just finished playing his freshman season for the IMG Academy national team. He is currently in the class of 2026.

Vincent Stewart Jr was the second leading scorer for Puerto with 18 points on 8-16 (50%) shooting but he also added 11 rebounds. Stewart is just the 7th player to record a double-double against Team USA and first since Olivier Rioux from Team Canada in 2021.

Stewart Jr is a 16-year-old 6-foot-9 center.
