ESPN four-star prospect Jermel Thomas had his phone buzzing on June 15th, the first day college coaches could officially contact 2026 prospects.
Ranked fifth in the state of New York by ESPN, Thomas received calls from coaches at Hofstra, Manhattan, Seton Hall, Bryant, Fordham, Eastern Michigan, and St. John’s.
Adding to the excitement, Thomas also heard from Rhode Island and Providence, both of which extended scholarship offers during their conversations.
“It was a blessing to get those offers,” he shared.
St. John’s, a home-state program, who also reached out, had a really good conversation with him. For Thomas, it was exciting to hear from an in-state school, and he had nothing but good things to say about the program.
“I love it. The conversation was great. It’s my home town. All my family and friends are here,” he said. “I like St. John’s program. [Rick Pitino] is bringing the program back to greatness.”
Thomas is an intriguing prospect for coaches, showcasing true point guard skills. He mentioned that coaches particularly admire his court vision. During the last Nike Session in Kansas City, KS, Thomas had a 30-point game, where he also dished out 11 assist in a win against Team United (NC).
During that game, he knocked down 11 of his 12 shots, including four of his five three-point attempts. He also showcased his defensive prowess with four steals.
He has showcased big game ability, and will continue that with the NY Rens on the Nike EYBL circuit for the rest of the summer, where even more coaches are likely to take notice.
