According to the major recruiting outlets currently, Cooper Flagg is the consensus No. 1 overall player in High School Basketball. He is ranked as the top prospect by 247 Sports, ESPN, On3 and Rivals.
This distinction has not occurred since 2021 and has only happened six times since 1998 before this year, according to data from RSCI (Recruiting Services Consensus Index.)
Flagg joins a very short list of players that includes, 2021 Chet Holmgren, 2018 RJ Barrett, 2013 Andrew Wiggins, 2006 Greg Oden, 2004 Dwight Howard, and 2003 LeBron James.
Of these players, four were subsequently chosen as the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA draft (Wiggins, Oden, Howard, James), with Holmgren drafted 2nd overall and Barrett 3rd overall.
The historical precedence suggests a potential trajectory for Flagg, possibly leading to a top overall selection or, at the least, a position within the top three picks. He is currently projected as the top overall selection in the 2025 NBA draft Mock by NBAdraft.net as of May 2024.
Flagg has signed with Duke, where he will begin his collegiate basketball career in the 2024-25 season.
His high school tenure has been distinguished by various accolades, notably being named USA Basketball’s Male Athlete of the Year in 2022 at just 15 years old, becoming the youngest recipient of this honor since its inception in 1980.
Additionally, Flagg has been recognized as the Naismith Prep Player of the Year and the Gatorade National Player of the Year for the 2023-24 season, while leading Montverde Academy to an undefeated season and another High School Basketball National Championship at the Chipotle Nationals.
