The story of Tyreek Coleman is just beginning to unfold. The 6-foot-2 point guard snagged his first official Division I scholarship offer from Miami (Ohio) in April 2024, right after wrapping up his junior season.

Fast forward a few months, and Coleman’s recruitment has skyrocketed. He’s secured four more scholarship offers from Illinois State, Northern Iowa, Murray State, and Indiana State, with a multitude of other college programs expressing interest.

Schools like Drake, Wofford, Furman, Iona, Appalachian State, Belmont, and Penn have all reached out. With a few live periods remaining in July, even more offers could be on the horizon.

“It definitely is surreal when you finally get that call and hear coaches saying they want to extend an offer because it validates all the work you put in and all the stuff you’ve been trying to achieve,” Coleman said. “It’s definitely a positive motivator to keep wanting to improve and get better to ultimately be successful at the next level.”

And improving is something that Coleman has done consistently since picking up that first offer in April. Now on the AAU circuit with the Illinois Wolves on the UAA circuit, more eyes are on him, and more coaches have been evaluating his game.

“Coaches have been talking about my on-court IQ and how I can see the court as far as passing ability,” he said. “Just playing at my own pace, being able to stop on a dime, staying poised, and not really getting sped up by defenders.”

“…I’m just a diverse player. A guy that can do it all, knock down shots, facilitate for my teammates, get to the cup if needed, and play defense.”

So far, he’s taken visits to Northern Iowa, Illinois State, and Miami (Ohio). In August, he plans to visit more schools to aid in his college decision, which could come later this year.

“It’s still early. I’m still building and mending relationships with all these college coaching staffs,” he said. “I’m still open to everybody right now and taking everything as is. Hopefully, with the month of July, without visiting, just talking to the coaches, can help me make my decision a lot easier.”

As he heads into his final year of high school basketball, Coleman’s story is far from finished. The 2025 prospect, who averaged 14.7 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 2.5 steals per game as a junior for Waubonsie Valley (Ill.), has much more to show. With the July evaluation periods, more coaches are expected to join the chase.

Coleman will be playing with the Illinois Wolves during the UAA Session III in Atlanta, Georgia, from July 11-14, and also for the finals in Chicago, Illinois, from July 19-21.
