USA Basketball 16U Team Eyes Ninth Straight Gold at FIBA Men’s U16 AmeriCup

The USA Men’s U16 National Team will look to extend its dominant run at the FIBA Men’s U16 AmeriCup, aiming for a ninth consecutive gold medal as the tournament tips off June 1st. Since the event’s inception in 2009, the U.S. has been the undisputed powerhouse, holding a perfect 43-0 all-time record and securing every win by double digits.

As it stands today, the 2025 squad will be the youngest team the United States has ever sent to the AmeriCup with an average age of 15.25, surpassing the previous mark of 15.3 set by the 2011 team. That 2011 roster featured eight 15-year olds, according to the AmeriCup record book. This current team features 8 players 15 years or younger with one being a 14-year old.

That 14-year-old is Colton Hiller, a 6-foot-5 wing from Coatesville High School (Pa.), who joins Seventh Woods (2013) as the only 14-year-olds to earn a spot on the team.

The U.S. enters the 2025 tournament with a five-game 100-point scoring streak, the second-longest such streak at the U16 level. The only other streak 100-point games that is longer was set between 2009 and 2013, and ended at 11 games.

The team’s offensive firepower has been matched by its suffocating defense. The Americans have held opponents under 65 points in six straight games, tying the U16 team longest streak set between 2017 and 2019.

Recent results have been particularly lopsided, with the U.S. winning its last five games by 50 points or more—a team record at the U16 level. The previous mark of four straight 50-point wins was set in 2021. Overall, 21 of the team’s 43 all-time victories have come by at least 50 points.

In 2023, the U.S. dominated the competition, winning every game by at least 35 points. Only five of their 43 games all-time have been decided by fewer than 20 points, with the narrowest margin of victory being 14.

This year’s pool play will see the U.S. face familiar foes: Argentina, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic. The Americans have a combined 20-0 record against those three countries, winning by an average margin of 49 points per game.

While the U.S. has already established itself as the team to beat, the stakes remain high. The top four finishers at the AmeriCup will qualify for the 2026 FIBA Men’s U17 World Cup in Turkey, where the Americans will aim to defend their global dominance.

The U.S. opens the tournament June 2 against Mexico, followed by a matchup with the Dominican Republic on June 3 and a game against Argentina on June 4. The quarter finals are set for June 6, the semifinals on June 7, and the championship game will take place June 8.
