Garrison Powell of Holy Innocents Episcopal School (GA) has started to hear from more programs following his junior season.

He said that he’s been talking a lot to Maryland, Virginia Tech, Xavier and Stanford recently.

Maryland, who plans on inviting him to campus for a visit once the Covid-19 pandemic subsides, has been a big fan of his game and his progression. The staff believes he could be a big part of their success moving forward.

“Coach [DeAndre] Haynes told me that he likes my play style and said that I’m definitely a Maryland guard. He said I could come in and fit their play style really well,” he said. “He likes my size at the point guard position, how I can score the ball, attack the rim and that I’m athletic. He says I’m a perfect fit at Maryland.”

Maryland should be a major player moving forward in the recruitment of Powell, but they won’t be alone in their pursuit of the talented Georgia guard.

Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Middle Tennessee State, Elon, James Madison and Florida Gulf Coast have all offered Powell so far with plenty more showing interest.

Both Mississippi programs, who were one of the earlier offers for Powell, were categorized as big time offers due to his family connection in Mississippi.

“Ole Miss was a big offer. My dad played baseball there when he went to college. So that was a big offer,” he said. “And pretty much all my family on my dad’s side lives in Mississippi, so Ole Miss and Mississippi State are two big offers.”

Expect a very competitive pursuit for Powell. He’s still very much open in his recruitment process and doesn’t have any favorites or leaders. He’s giving everyone an equal opportunity to recruit him, and his list should explode once Covid-19 subsides and coaches are able to see his improvement.

“[Coaches] like how I can get the rebound and push the break, my tempo, I can knock down shots in the mid-range or three, and I can post up or get to the rack whenever I want,” he said. “If they put a taller defender on me, like a shooting guard, I can get around them and make plays for my teammates.”

“They just like my versatility. I can play on ball, off ball, and do a bunch of things.”
