Back in August of 2018 Walter Urbina announced that he would be transferring from San Jose State to City College of San Francisco.

The 6-7 forward has since then one of the primary options for head coach Justin Labagh and many college coaches are getting involved as a result.

After averaging 10.7 points and 4.6 rebounds per game in his first season at the junior college program, Grand Canyon, New Mexico State, San Diego State, Cal State-Bakersfield, Oregon, Memphis, North Carolina A&T, Washington State and Fresno State, among others have reached out to him personally or his coaches.

His recruitment has certainly picked up as of late and coaches are impressed with similar aspects of his game.

“From what I hear, I have a high motor. That’s usually the first thing they say,” he said. “I’m very physical, very passionate and I try to do it all on the court.”

Grand Canyon and New Mexico State have stood out to Urbina, who remains wide open.

“The hardest? I’d say GCU because they offered me immediately on the first call,” he said. “They said we like you. We did our research on you and we love you, we want you.”

As for New Mexico State? They’ve been involved for longer than anyone and, “the best relationship that I have with the coaches right now, I’d say New Mexico State.”

New Mexico could certainly use someone like Urbina. They’re scheduled to lose two forwards that starred in 30-plus games last season and that’s been their pitch to him so far.

“They said they need me and they want me,” he explained. “They’re losing some guys that I would be perfect to fill in for, do some great things and continue on with the tradition is what they said.”

But for all the schools recruiting him, they have about six months to give their best pitches to the 6-7 wing. Urbina not only knows when he’ll commit, but has plans to narrow down shortly before he decides.

“I won’t be narrowing down until the last month before I’m committing, and I have a month set,” he said. “Once I know what school I want to go to in March, no matter if it’s March 1st or March 28th, I’m committing.”
